Deep Thought Thursday: Mental Illness

I just don't understand why there is such a stigma surrounding mental illness. In a society where it's perfectly acceptable to pop a pill for a slight headache (or let's be honest, no headache), it boggles my mind that we have such a hard time accepting that sufferers of depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, etc. might need that little extra help as well. We would never criticize an individual who needs heart medication; so why is it so hard to believe someone might need head medication?

I find it so offensive and completely ignorant to hear people comment on how "dramatic" someone is being or that they're just "trying to get attention". You have no idea how it feels to be on fire on the inside while being unable to express just how much it burns to everyone on the outside. Or that person who feels completely dead and empty on the inside without the ability to find solace in anything they once enjoyed or loved? Yeah,  that sounds waaaaay more dramatic than morose to me.... (hear the sarcasm).

The next time you roll your eyes and tell them to "just get out of bed - you'll be fine", I highly recommend you just don't. Trust me, it will probably only make that person feel 100 times worse because they can't and won't (through NO fault of their own).
